Janazah

What Should Be Done When A Person Passes Away

  • Close eyes immediately.
  • Tie a piece of cloth from the chin to the head - to keep the mouth close
  • Cover him or her with a sheet.
  • Do not expose Satr-i-Awrah (parts that are Fard to be covered - navel to knee for men, and from the neck to ankles for women) when removing clothing, by covering appropriately with a sheet. After this has been done, proceed with the Ghusl

Expenses:

  • From the estate of the deceased.
  • If no estate, then the responsibility is on the next of kin.
  • If no kins, or if they are too poor, then the expenses should come from the organisation responsible for the welfare of the community.
  • If no such organisation is in existence, then every member of the congregation must contribute.

After the body is totally covered, it is desirable to throw three handfuls of soil into the grave, with each handful saying: Q 20:55.

  • After 1st throw: Minhaa khalaqnaa kum [From the earth did We create you]
  • After 2nd throw: Wa feehaa Nu’eedu kum [And into it shall We return you ]
  • After 3rd throw:  Wa minhaa nukhrijukum taaratan ‘ukhraa [And from it shall We bring you out once again]

Consoling the relatives:

When consoling a Muslim for the death of his Muslim beloved you say:

a ^ dhama-llahu ajrak(a), wa ahsana ^aza'ak(a), wa ghafara limayyitik,

“May Allah reward you greatly, give you good patience, and forgive your deceased (loved) one”.

Malik reported from the Hadith of Jabir Ibn 'Atik that the Prophet s.a.w said: "There are seven classes of martyrs except the one who is killed while fighting in the cause of Allah:

There are seven  pillars of Salaatul Janazah

  • Niyyah
  • Four Takbeers
  • Sura Fatiha
  • Salawat on the Prophet
  • D'ua for the deceased
  • First Salaam
  • Standing for those who can
