Visiting The Grave

Narrated Mujahid: 'Abdullah bin 'Umar said, "Allah's Apostle took hold of my shoulder and said, ' Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler.' The sub-narrator added: Ibn 'Umar used to say, "If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death." Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 425

Prayer When Visiting Graveyard:

Peace be upon you dwellers of these abodes, believers and Muslims. May Allah have mercy on those of you who were first ( to die ) and those who were last. We will, whenever Allah wills, join you. I beg of Allah salvation for us and for you. You preceded us and we will follow you. 0 Allah! Deprive us not from reward ( similar to theirs ) and lead us not astray after they are gone

It is the opinion of most scholars that when visiting the graveyard, a person should recite the following Surahs because of their individual excellence, and then convey the reward of recitation:
  • Surah Fateha (one of the best prayers),
  • Surah Yaseen (the heart of the Holy Quran),
  • Surah Ikhlas (equal to one third of Holy Quran in reward)
  • Surah Mulk (intercedes for the reader till the reader is forgiven).

allahumma awsil thawaba ma qara'tuhu ila fulan aw ilayhim

O Allah, convey the reward of what I have recited to So-and-so
