Friday Prayer

The Friday prayer is a two-cycle group prayer performed Friday afternoon following two brief speeches, or sermons. It takes the place of the afternoon (zuhr) prayer when completed validly. Its performance is simple and is explained at f18 of the Reliance of the Traveller.

Khutbah Doa

I bear witness that none is worthy of Worship but Allah(swt),who is alone without partners and I bear witness that Muhammad(saw) is his slave and Messenger.

BISMILLAAHIR-RAHMAANIR-RAHEEM - In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Innal hamdalillah nahamaduhu wanasta'inuhu wanastaghfiruhu , wana'oozu billahi min shuroori anfusina wa min sayyi 'aati 'aamalina. May yahdihillahu Fala mudhillalah , wa may yudlil falaa haadiyalah wa ashadu an laa ilaaha illallah wahdahoo laa sharikalah , wa ashadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa Rasooluh amma ba'd.....

Praise be to Allah , we praise Him , seek His aid, and ask His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of ourselves and from our bad deeds. He whom Allah guides , there is None to MISGUIDE him, and He(swt) whom he leaves astray there is NONE to guide him except Allah! I bear witness that none is worthy of Worship but Allah(swt),who is alone without partners and I bear witness that Muhammad(saw) is his slave and Messenger.

Unlike the five daily prayers, it is not valid to offer the Friday prayer alone.

Therefore, when offering the Friday prayer, one must intend four things:
  • That one is praying;
  • That this prayer is an obligation (Ar. fard);
  • That it is the Friday prayer;
  • That it is in congregation. (Alternatively, the imam can intend being an imam and the follower can intend being a follower.)

All four components must be present during the opening Allahu Akbar of the Friday prayer.

So while saying Allahu Akbar you should be conscious that you are praying the obligatory Friday prayer in a group

A description of its near-minimal performance:

After the time of the afternoon prayer has entered (f18.10(c)), one of the participants stands (f18.10(d)) facing the rest (f18.11(5)) and delivers the Friday sermon, saying for example:

  • 1) "Al-hamdu liLlah" (f18.9(a))
  • (2) "Allahumma salli `ala Muhammad" (f18.9(b))
  • (3) "Ittaqu Llah" (f18.9(c))
  • (4) "Qul huwa Llahu ahad" (f18.9(d)) Then he sits (f18.10(e)) for a couple of seconds and stands again, saying for example:
  • (5) "Al-hamdu liLlah" (f18.9(a))
  • (6) "Allahumma salli `ala Muhammad" (f18.9(b))
  • (7) "Ittaqu Llah" (f18.9(c))
  • (8) "Allahumma rhami l-mu'minin" (f18.9(e))
He has then completed the requirements of the Friday sermon (f18.9-10), and the participants then pray the Friday prayer together (f18.7(c)).

There are additional sunnas, or recommended measures (f18.11), of the Friday prayer that may be taken: in them is great merit, but there is no sin in omitting them, and omitting them does not affect the validity of the Friday prayer

Is it prescribed for the khateeb to say “Aqoolu qawli haadha wa astaghfir-Allaah  (I say these words of mine and I ask Allah for forgiveness)?
