The Meaning of the Fatihah

  • In the Name of Allah (the One Who deserves to be worshipped), Who is ar-Rahman (the One Who is merciful to both Muslims and non-Muslims in this life), and ar-Rahim (the One Who is merciful to Muslims only in the Hereafter).
  • Praise and thanks to Allah, the Rabb (Owner) of the worlds (of angels, humans, jinn, and others) for the givings He granted without Him being obligated to do so.
  • He is ar-Rahman (the One Who is merciful to both Muslims and non-Muslims in this life), and ar-Rahim (the One Who is merciful to Muslims only in the Hereafter).
  • He is the Owner of the Day of Judgment.
  • To You (Allah) only we dedicate worship (the ultimate subjugation), and from You (Allah) only we seek help.
  • Keep us guided (firmly) on the Straight Path (Islam),
  • Which is the Path of those upon whom You bestowed guidance by Islam (prophets and other Muslims), not the path of those whom You willed to punish, or the path of those who went astray

A'uzubillahi minassyaitanir rajim.

"I take refuge in Allah from the accursed Devil."

The Ta'awwudh is said in every rak'a and especially recommended in the first, whether one is imam, follower, or praying by oneself, and whether the prayer is obligatory, supererogatory, or even a funeral prayer. It is said to oneself in both the prayers recited to oneself and those recited aloud.

Bismilla hirrahma nirrahim.Alhamdulillahi rabbil 'alamin. Arrahma nirrahim. Maliki yaumiddin. Iyyaka na'kbudu waiyyaka nasta'in. Ihdinassiratal mustaqim. Siratal lazina an'amta'alaihim ghairil maghdubi 'alaihim waladdhalin.
