How & when to recite doa qunut.
The Meaning of the Qunut Supplication
O Allah, guide me among those whom You guided, relieve me from sickness among those whom You relieved, support me among those whom You supported, bless for me what You gave me. Protect me against the evil of what You created, for You are the One Who orders (ordains) and not the One Who is ordered (ordained for). Whomever You support is not weakened and ignored, and whomever You oppose is not dignified. O our Lord, may Your givings increase. You are the Supreme One Whose status is high and great and You are clear of any imperfection. Praise is due for what You ordained. I ask You for forgiveness and I repent to You. May Allah raise the rank of Muhammad, and his folks and Companions. May Allah protect the Prophet’s Nation from what he feared for it.
The minimal requirements for the qunut:
- (1) a supplication (du'a)
- (2) a praise of Allah ( thana ')
- (3) invocation of blessings (salat) and peace (salam) on the Prophet (nabi), his folk (aal) and companions (sahb).
The formula: "allaahumma-ghfir lee yaa ghafoor allahumma salli 'ala sayyidina muhammad wa 'alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa sallim" meets the above requirements and is therefore sufficient.[1] (Fath al-'Allam, 2.251)
-
Doa qunut is recited in the last rakaat of Fajr prayer - done after ruku and before sujud.
-
Recite the du`a of qunut during Witr Prayer in the Second Half of Ramadan
It is recommended to make the standing supplication (Ar. du'a al-qunut) in the last rak'ah of witr after rising from ruku`, during the second half of Ramadan. This practice starts on the night of the sixteenth (i.e. the night before the sixteenth day) of Ramadan. If one forgets, it is recommended to prostrate out of forgetfulness.
If you are the Imam , the following applies:
- "Allah humah dini" to "Allah humah dina"
- "Wa'a fini" to "Wa'a fina"
- ''Watawallani" to "Watawallana"
- "Wabarikli" to "Wabariklana"
- "Waqinii" to "Waqina"
The followers do not then have to say the dua but to say ameen after each of the following:
- Allah humah dina fiman hadait - ameen
- Wa'a fina fiman 'afait - ameen
- Watawallana fiman tawalait - ameen
- Wabariklana fimaa a'tait - ameen
- Waqina syarramaa qadzait - ameen
